B&Q will open six warehouses across the UK in 1998

The home improvement chain, B&Q, has announced the creation of 1,500 new jobs.

The company plans to open six new warehouses across the country in 1998, a move which will create 250 store management positions over the next three years.

The stores will open in Warrington in June and Stockport and Birmingham in December.

A further three sites will open at the end of 1998.

Part of the Kingfisher group which includes Woolworths, Comet and Superdrug, B&Q is the country's leading Do-It-Yourself retailer with a 17.1% share of the market.

Last year the company earned £1,464bn with profits of £97.2m.

B&Q currently has 282 stores across the country employing 19,500 people.

The company created 1,800 new jobs last year and employs 250 people in each warehouse.

Designed to service a large catchment area, the new flagship warehouses are 150,000 sq ft with a 40,000 product range.
