McManaman celebrates his second goal with Robbie Fowler

Steve McManaman has scored twice to secure Liverpool three points at Newcastle.

The England midfielder struck in the 31st and 42nd minutes to canel out Steve Watson's near-post header in the 16th.

McManaman's first, a 20-yard angled drive, came after fine build-up play from forwards Mike Owen and Robbie Fowler.

His second, from closer range, was a volley hooked into the net after being brilliantly set up by the ever dangerous Owen.

But Liverpool were stretched in the second half as the Magpies, without a win in seven matches laid siege to the Reds' goal.

Faustino Asprilla and Keith Gillespie both squandered fine openings

Liverpool had David James to thank for keeping them in front when the Liverpool keeper produced a stunning save to tip over a ferocious shot 10 minutes from time.
