Klinsmann takes on the Arsenal defence in the north London derby

Jurgen Klinsmann made a low-key return to English soccer as Tottenham drew 1-1 with north London rivals Arsenal.

Mike Ingham reports on Klinsmann's return and Spurs' draw (Dur: 0-47")
The German striker was given a standing ovation for his second debut at the club where he was such a hit three years.

In the 28th minute he produced a slight but telling touch to outfox the Arsenal defence and provide the opening for Allan Nielson.

Klinsmann supplied the merest deflection to Ruel Fox's cross enabling Danish international Nielson to put Spurs 1-0 up at White Hart Lane.

Three minutes later Spurs' luck held as Arsenal's Nicolas Anelka hit the post.

Klinsmann challenges Steve Bould
Arsenal centre-backs Steve Bould and Martin Keown shackled the German for most of the first half when Frenchman David Ginola emerged as the biggest threat for relegation-threatened Tottenham.

Without the suspended Ian Wright and the injured David Platt, Arsenal were content to sit back in the opening 20 minutes and soak up Spurs pressure.

Klinsmann produced a couple of neat turns to stretch the Arsenal defence and when he wheeled away from Bould in the fifth minute.

His cross to the far post was met with a powerful header from Stephen Clemence that flew just wide.

Spurs grabbed their goal in the 28th minute, just two minutes after Arsenal right back Lee Dixon was taken off injured and replaced by Gilles Grimaldi

After the goal Arsenal moved up a gear and Spurs suddenly looked hesitant at the back.

In the second half Arsenal's confidence grew, with Ray Parlour a consistent outlet for through balls down the right.

The equalizer came after Spurs only managed to half-clear a corner.

The ball came out only as far as Nigel Winterburn who, instead of taking the obvious route and planting it back in the box, played it short for Parlour.

He turned and hit a powerful right foot drive that took a massive deflection off Ramon Vega to land in the far corner of the net.
