Woman dies after being attacked by ostrich

A South African woman has died in hospital two weeks after being attacked by an ostrich.

Police said Anna Hendricks, 63, and her husband, were attacked by a male ostrich while they were crossing a field on an ostrich farm near Cape Town.

Both were admitted to hospital in Cape Town but her husband was later discharged.

Male ostriches are extremely territorial and often attack intruders by kicking them, and raking them with their long claws.

From the newsroom of the BBC World Service.
