Sri Lankan navy chief survives bomb attack

Police in Sri Lanka say a bomb explosion in the south of the country, just outside a navy base, was a suicide attack by Tamil Tiger rebels.

They say the blast may have been an assassination attempt on the Sri Lankan navy chief, Admiral Cecil Tissera, who was staying the night at the base, near the port of Galle.

The bomb, inside a truck, went off close to a security checkpoint.

Three occupants of the truck were killed, and police say they found the remains of the type of jacket used by suicide bombers to carry explosives.
