It has been a turbulent year for the won, but South Korea hopes 1998 might be more stable

Bankers from around the world, including Europe, America and Japan, are expected to hold talks on Monday to help South Korea deal with its economic crisis.

Japan's vice finance minister for international affairs, Eisuke Sakakibara, said the meeting would be held to discuss how to tackle banks' unwillingness to lend the country cash.

Japan and other major industrialised nations have agreed to speed up aid to South Korea as part of an International Monetary Fund (IMF) rescue package.

Mr Sakakibara forecast that with co-operation from the private financial sector, South Korea could be rescued from its current financial crisis and recover the confidence of the international community.

Six American banks have said they may supplement the $10bn which is going to South Korea under the IMF-led assistance package.
