Saturday, December 27, 1997 Published at 15:06 GMT UK Diana memorial could be landmine-clearing centre Diana brought worldwide attention to the dangers of landmines
The British Government is considering setting up a landmine-clearing centre in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales.
The suggestion for the centre came from Lindsay Hoyle, Labour MP for Chorley, Lancashire. He says the training school could be based at the Royal Ordnance Factory in Lancashire, using spare capacity land.
Mr Hoyle said the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, had assured him that the idea was interesting and should be put to the committee deciding how to comemmorate the life of the Princess.
Mr Hoyle said: "This would be of inestimable value to the crusade
most close to the heart of the late Princess.
"After discussions involving British Aerospace and the landmines and ordnance
clearance team at the Royal Ordnance Factory, it was suggested they had the
proven skills and equipment to be able to pass on their knowledge to others.
"They have been involved in clearance projects all over the world in
countries like Mozambique, Angola, Cambodia and Canada. The level of expertise
in the landmines clearance team therefore was evident and a training centre
seemed like an excellent way of passing on this essential knowledge."
