Strong winds left scenes of devastation

In North Wales, 350 homes are still without electricity as engineers continue their battle to repair lines damaged in the Christmas storms.

The electricity company Manweb said the area of Lleyn Peninsular was causing a particular problem because of its location and the scale of damage.

"We are still working around the clock to get supplies reconnected," a spokeswoman said.

The electricity companies, Norweb and Manweb, say they have reconnected the vast majority of homes in the north-west of England which lost power over Christmas after winter storms ravaged the areas.

Thousands of homes were without electricity on Christmas Day. A few hundred in the Lake District and in Lancashire are still without power.

Damage from gales, which swept the country on Christmas Eve, is still being cleared.

North West company Norweb was forced to call emergency staff from Scotland and Yorkshire in a bid to restore power to customers.

Six people died in the storms, including a father, his daughter and her boyfriend, who were killed when a 60ft tree fell on their car in Pengam, near Blackwood, Gwent.

Two other passengers in the car were treated in hospital for minor injuries.

A 32-year-old woman from Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, was killed on Christmas Eve when a tree crashed on to her car as she travelled to visit friends.

Another day to beware the wind is Tuesday, with gales likely in the northwest and any exposed places.
