Mine explosion southern Senegalese province

A landmine explosion in the southern Senegalese province of Casamance has killed at least two people and seriously injured six others.

The blast happened in the village of Thionck Essyl, eighty kilometres north-west of the provincial capital, Ziguinchor.

The victims were travelling in a taxi that drove over the mine.

Another explosive device is reported to have caused extensive damage to the main administration hall in the village but there were no casualties.

The explosions are believed to be the work of Casamance separatist rebels who are marking the fifteenth anniversary of their armed campaign.
