Friday, December 26, 1997 Published at 14:00 GMT World Irish racing mice should be 'non-runners' ![]() Racing mice in Ireland could be facing the chequered flag if an Irish MP gets his way.
Festive season races have become traditional - but there are calls for one race meeting to be scrapped.
An Irish MP wants a nationwide ban on MICE racing.
Billy Kelleher, a Fianna Fail party representative, made his demand after reports that Galway's University College had provided runners from its laboratory for a mouse-racing festival.
He slammed the festival - being staged this weekend in the County Galway village of Ballymacward - as "a Mickey Mouse event" and urged its cancellation.
Mr Kelleher added: "The university should maintain its squeaky-clean image.
"Providing mice for a racing festival hardly enhances it. In fact, it damages Ireland's national image.
"I was surprised that the university should agree to provide mice for the festival, even if it was for fund-raising purposes. It is cruel, and an
alternative should be considered."
