Heavy fighting in Afghanistan as peace talks continue in Pakistan
Fresh fighting is reported in north eastern Afghanistan with the Taleban militia saying it has seized two mountain villages near the border with Pakistan. If confirmed, it would mark the first time the Taleban has succeeded in gaining ground in the region, which is controlled by troops loyal to the ousted President, Burhanuddin Rabbani. The fighting comes as representatives of the anti-Taleban coalition hold discussions in neighbouring Paristan, aimed at ending the eighteen year civil war. The Taleban have said they will negotiate but only if their opponents disarm and accept Islamic law. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
