Violence in Malaysian land dispute

Reports from Malaysia say that at least one person has been shot and about six others seriously injured, including two police officers, in clashes between villagers and police in northern Sarawak.

The violence broke out in the Barang district last Friday, when police attempted to arrest village leaders after three bulldozers were impounded by local inhabitants in a dispute with the state government over the development of land for a palm oil plantation.

More than twenty people are reported to have been arrested and security in the area has been stepped up..
