Wednesday, December 24, 1997 Published at 06:09 GMT UK Illegal immigrants arrested in Kent ![]() Slovakian and Czech gypsies have been arriving in Britain over the last few months
Police in Kent have arrested 26 illegal immigrants who stowed away in a lorry which had travelled from Belgium.
The group were found jumping from the back of the lorry as it stopped near Maidstone.
The group includes people from Albania, Slovakia and Asia.
There has been an influx of Czech and Slovak gypsies to the south of England over the last few months.
A television programme broadcast in the Czech republic claimed they would get more in social security benefits in a week in Britain than they would in a month at home.
A special religious service organized for Czech and Slovak gypsies currently in Dover has been attended by the Bishop of Dover, the area's rural dean, various vicars and their assistants, but no gypsies attended.
Prayers and blessings were offered in their absence, and carols which were to have been sung in Czech were rendered in English instead.
