Arrested Kaunda security chief man in mental anguish

The authorities in Zambia are still holding former President Kaunda's head of security, Maurice Kaulung'Oombe, following his arrest on Tuesday but no reason has been given.

Mr Kaunda's opposition United National Independence Party said it could be linked to the failed coup attempt in Zambia in October.

His lawyer Mwangala Zaloumis visited him in prison and said he was in good physical health, but mentally troubled.

His arrest coincided with the return to Zambia earlier this week of Mr Kaunda who has been on a two-month world tour.

In 1995 Mr Kaulong'Ombe and other UNIP leaders spent five months in jail before being acquitted on treason charges.

Earlier this year he was held for three days after the alleged shooting of Mr Kaunda in central Zambia.
