A leading member of the National Farmers Union in Scotland has resigned over the beef crisis.
The Chief Executive, Tom Brady, stepped down after criticism of the union's actions in recent weeks.
Farmers have complained that the union has not fought hard enough for them but Mr Brady's colleagues paid tribute to his skills.
Mr Brady said he could not bring himself to change the advice he had given to his former President, Sandy Mole.
He said: "It had become clear that the advice I was giving to the president was out of line with the mood of the majority of the members of the Scottish NFU."
"Before I told Sandy Mole about my decision, I tested my conscience and could not bring myself to change the legal and political advice I had given. I had to go. I resigned at the first opportunity.
Acting Presidents Stewart Whiteford and George Lyon praised his efforts in helping the union through the beef crisis.
Mr Lyon said: "Tom Brady's selfless efforts have played a key role in securing a future for the industry, particularly in recent months.
"Thanks to his efforts, the union is in good shape to go forward and tackle the current crisis in Scottish farming."
