Paris mayor drums up support for Churchill statue
The mayor of Paris has added his voice to calls for a statue to the former British prime minister, Winston Churchill, to be placed close to the Champs Elysees. The mayor, Jean Tiberi, described Churchill as a hero who gave support to the free French forces of General de Gaulle during the second world war. Mr Tiberi -- in an appeal for funding for the statue -- said a statue to de Gaulle was set up in London in 1993 thanks to British generosity. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
