Police in Plymouth have dubbed the baby Noel

Police searching for the mother of an abandoned baby boy have received dozens of calls from the public, offering presents and help.

The tot, dubbed Noel by police, was abandoned on Tuesday by his distressed mother at a social security office in Plymouth, Devon.

Noel, who is thought to be about four months old, is now in the care of Devon social services.

Devon and Cornwall Police are seeking the dark-haired mother who witnesses described as "very stressed and depressed".

She told staff: "I have had enough" and then left the city centre building and ran off in the direction of the Barbican area of the city.

Police said all the indications were that the woman was the child's mother and they said they were keen to reunite him with her.

Inspector David Evans said the infant was well nourished and had been well cared for and added: "The right place for him is with his mother."

The baby was dressed in a white jumper, lime green baby suit, yellow socks and cap, and a maroon jumpsuit. His patchwork quilt was handmade.

Insp Evans said: "She has probably reached the end of her tether, and our message is make contact and we will find someone who can help her. She needs support."

Film from city centre closed circuit TV cameras was unsuccessfully scanned for a sign of the woman, who was wearing jeans and a denim jacket.

Rosemary James, a receptionist at the civic centre building where the baby was abandoned said the woman was clearly "stressed and depressed".

She said: "It is terribly sad. I hope she comes back and finds her baby, and they are reunited for Christmas."

Noel is likely to be cared for by foster parents until his mother comes forward or is found.
