New Chief Hustice sworn in in Pakistan after Supreme Court dismissalRADIO H/L: New Chief Justice of Pakistan sworn in after Supreme Court ruled the appointment of Sajjad Ali Shah in l994 was unconstitutional

Government officials in Pakistan say a new Chief Justice has been sworn in after the Supreme Court ruling that the appointment in l994 of Sajjad Ali Shah to the post was unconstitutional.

The new Chief Justice, Ajmal Mian, has been acting in the post since the suspension last month of his predecessor, who had been involved in a prolonged confrontation with the Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif.

Sajjad Ali Shah has expressed shock and surprise at the decision to remove him.

The BBC Islamabad correspondent says the case has exposed deep divisions in the judiciary, once the most respected institution in Pakistan.
