France detains GIA suspect

Police in France say they are holding a suspected member of the militant Algerian Armed Islamic Group, GIA, who is alleged to have been involved in a wave of bombings two years ago.

The man, Mohamed Kerouche -- a French citizen of Algerian origin -- was arrested on Friday after being deported from Britain.

The French police arrested nearly a-hundred fundamentalists in its efforts to root out an Islamist network in the capital, Paris, but Mr Kerouche escaped to Britain where he was arrested last week on charges of illegal immigration.
