Sierra Leone government condemns Kabbah visit

The military government in Sierra Leone has denounced the brief visit on Sunday by the deposed president Ahmed Tejan Kabbah -- his first since his overthrow in May.

A spokesman said it was evidence that Mr Kabbah was conniving with the Nigerians.

Mr Kabbah flew from neighbouring Guinea to the Lungi Peninsula across the river from the Sierra Leone capital, Freetown, which is controlled by the Nigerian-led peacekeeping force ECOMOG.

It is enforcing an international air and sea embargo, in an effort to make the military government restore civilian rule in Sierra Leone.

The spokesman denied that the visit was proof that the government was not in full control, and said Mr Kabbah's action might impede the faltering peace process.
