South Africa to recognise China
South Africa and China -- which already have strong economic ties -- are to establish diplomatic relations next week. A ceremony opening the Chinese embassy in the capital Pretoria is to be held on New Year's Day, during the official visit of the Chinese Vice Premier, Qian Qichen, who is also his country's Foreign Minister. This will mark the end of South Africa's diplomatic ties with Taiwan. ). From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
