Monday, December 22, 1997 Published at 14:07 GMT Sport Pleat joins Klinsmann back at Spurs Pleat: Back at White Hart Lane after 10 years away
David Pleat has become the latest Tottenham old boy to rejoin the struggling London side as the club's new director of football.
Pleat, who was sacked as Sheffield Wednesday boss last month, will officially take up his new position on January 15 next year.
Club chairman Alan Sugar made the announcement at the news conference which heralded the return of another Spurs favourite, Jurgen Klinsmann.
Sugar has been stung by recent comments that the Spurs board comprises of people with no background knowledge of football. It might be a factor in Pleat's appointment.
Pleat, who managed Spurs between 1986 and 1987, becomes a board member as well as carrying out a wide range of duties in his role as director of football.
Sugar said: "There has been a lot of criticism, as anyone who attended our AGM will testify, that the board is made up of people with no knowledge of football."
"David will take his seat on the board with effect from January 15. His
responsibilities will be for the youth policy, scouting and the financial
aspects of player contracts, which are very, very important."
"Christian Gross will have total responsibility for the buying and selling of
whatever players he wants or doesn't want."
Becoming Director of Football at Spurs could prove to be one of the most difficult challenges for Pleat who is in his 34th year of his footballing career.
Tottenham are currently 18th in the Premiership and have not looked any more stable under the auspices of new boss Christian Gross.
Tottenham fans will hope that Pleat's return along with Jurgen 'the German' will bring back the glory days.
