Bhutto calls for anti-corruption action in Pakistan
The former Pakistani prime minister, Benazir Bhutto, has called for a plan to combat corruption. At a news conference in Islamabad, Miss Bhutto said widespread corruption had created a parallel economy of unprecedented size. She said it needed to be replaced by an environment of accountability and transparency. Miss Bhutto's comments came one day after a court ordered that her jailed husband, Asif Ali Zardari, should be allowed to take the oath as a member of the Pakistani senate. Mr Zardari has been in prison since last year facing charges of corruption and murder. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
