Violence erupts in Nairobi constituency after ruling party loss

Anti-riot police went into action when violence erupted in a Nairobi constituency on Thursday after an opposition candidate was declared the victor in the presidential election.

The Kenyan news agency KNA said violence erupted after Democratic Party candidate Mwai Kibaki was declared winner in the Westlands constituency, with 17,154 votes, followed by President Daniel arap Moi with 16,651 votes and Kijana Wamalwa of Ford-Kenya, with 6,826 votes.

The returning officer called in anti-riot police after agents of the ruling party, KANU, and the outgoing MP, Fred Gumo, began shouting at the returning officer "and threatening her with fists, rendering the situation in the hall uncontrollable" when they realized their party had lost, the agency said.
