Nigerian military rulers meet

The military rulers of Nigeria have met, reportedly to discuss threats to national security -- two days after announcing they had foiled a coup plot.

No details of their talks were given, but a presidential spokesman said the purpose was to take a general look at security issues in the light of recent events.

One of those detained was Lieutenant-General Oladipo Diya, the deputy of the country's leader, General Sani Abacha.

The BBC West Africa correspondent says this reveals a split in the armed forces.

He adds that there have been reports of differences among military officers over arrangements for handing power back to civilians next year, as promised.
