Bangladeshi opposition MPs protest
More than ninety opposition Bangladeshi MPs have taken part in a protest against the peace agreement signed earlier this month between the government and rebels in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. The MPs -- led by the head of the main opposition BNP, Begum Khaleda Zia -- presented a letter to President Shahabuddin Ahmad voicing their concerns. It said the peace agreement was not in the national interest and discriminated against Bengalis who have settled in the Hill tracts. There have been a number of protests and strikes in Bangladesh since the agreement was signed. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
