Pavarotti opens Mostar music centre

The Italian opera singer, Luciano Pavarotti, has opened a children's music centre in the divided city of Mostar in southern Bosnia Hercegovina.

Pavarotti, who has raised three-million dollars for Bosnian causes, went to Mostar despite having pulled out of two concerts in Britain this week because of illness.

Also at the opening were the U2 singer, Bono, and the Irish group, The Chieftans. The centre, named after Pavarotti, is in a primary school, rebuilt after being destroyed during fighting between Croats and Muslims for control of Mostar.

The centre will provide musical teaching facilities for children from both communities.
