Elections being held in Laos

The people of Laos have been voting in large numbers to elect the country's ninety-nine member National Assembly.

Around one-hundred-and-fifty candidates are standing in the elections, but nearly all have been nominated by the ruling Lao People's Revolutionary Party.

The BBC correspondent in Laos says the election result is a foregone conclusion.

He says the national assembly challenged the government over key issues in the past year, and the government is now keen to fill it with more conservative party veterans.
