Iraq criticised at Gulf summit

Iraq has come under criticism at the opening of the Gulf Cooperation Council annual summit in Kuwait.

The Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Jabir al-Ahmed al-Sabah, said Iraq was still evading the terms of United Nations sanctions, which contributed to the continued suffering of its people.

But the Emir praised what he called the new era in relations between Iran and the six member states of the Council.

The three-day meeting is also expected to examine economic and security cooperation in the Gulf, and the Middle East peace process.

The Gulf Cooperation Council was established in 1981 and has the eventual aim of creating a common market.
