A Dutch passenger helicopter has made a crash landing into the North Sea close to an oil drilling platform. The six passengers and crew were picked up by a passing ship and are being taken to the nearest port for treatment. Stephen Fleahy reports from Amsterdam:
The KLM Era Sikorsky helicopter ditched without warning into the sea just before it was to land on the oil platform. It was on a routine flight carrying oil rig workers from the Dutch mainland to the platform about 35 miles north-west of the Dutch island of Terschelling.
A spokesman for KLM said the six passengers and crew were quickly rescued by a passing ship and were being taken to the nearest Dutch port for hospital treatment. One of those rescued was said to be unconscious.
The weather at the time of the accident, just on dusk, was said to be clear but sea temperatures at this time of the year are said to be very cold.
