Pakistan lists presidential nominees

The election commission in Pakistan has published the final list of candidates for the presidency, including the ruling party's nominee, Muhammad Rafiq Tarar.

The commission had on Thursday rejected his nomination on the grounds that he had made derogatory remarks about the judiciary.

But the Lahore High Court yesterday ruled that Mr Tarar was eligible to stand.

Correspondents say he seems certain to be elected in the vote on December 31 because of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League's domination of parliament and the provincial assemblies that choose the president.
