Turkish adulterers face jail
The Turkish parliament is considering whether men and women should receive equal punishment for adultery. Under current law, married women convicted of adultery face up to three years in jail, while men receive no punishment at all. A parliamentary commission has now recommended that adulterers of either sex should face prison terms of between six months and two years. Women's groups have long criticised the old law, which Turkey's minister responsible for women's affairs described as a major source of inequality. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
