Turkish human rights body orders improvement in prison

conditions Turkey's Human Rights Coordination Council on Friday undertook to improve conditions in the country's prisons and detention facilities, Turkish TV reported.

The council ordered that new prisons and detention facilities should be constructed in accordance with contemporary standards, and that conditions in existing prisons and detention facilities be improved.

It said staff in prisons and detention facilities would receive training within the framework of a joint project with the National Education Ministry.

It also ordered that regular health inspections be conducted in prisons and detention facilities in order to improve the conditions, and that provision be made for educating young offenders in detention.
