Alliance wins Djibouti poll
The governing alliance in Djibouti has won yesterday's general election, taking all sixty-five seats in the national assembly. The alliance groups President Gouled Aptidon's Popular Rally for Progress, and former rebels of the Front for the Restoration of Democracy. The elections, which took place under tight security, went off without serious incident -- a government spokesman said the turnout nationally was just over sixty per cent, but was much lower in the capital. The election confirms the power-sharing deal between the two parties reached in 1994 to end the civil war between the Issa and Afar ethnic groups. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
