Kenyan electoral authorities warn parties over campaign

violence Kenya's Electoral Commission on Friday warned parties taking part in the elections later this month to rein in their violent supporters.

According to Kenyan TV, the Commission accused five of the parties taking part in the elections of failing to restrain their youth from engaging in violent acts.

Commission chairman Samuel Kivuitu issued a statement saying the commission would not hesitate to invoke the punitive provisions of the electoral code of conduct to enforce discipline among the parties, the TV reported.

He named FORD - the Forum for the Restoration of Democracy, the Social Democratic Party, the National Development Party, the Democratic Party and the ruling KANU - Kenya African National Union - as the parties which had been involved in election violence, and warned that the commission would be vigilant over any further cases, the TV said.
