UN fact-finders complete Libya sanctions mission
A United Nations delegation has completed a week-long fact-finding mission to Libya to evaluate the effects of international sanctions. Libyan television said the delegation had been briefed by Libyan officials on the impact the sanctions are having on health care, transport and agriculture. A UN spokeswoman in Geneva said the team would report to UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, next week. Sanctions were imposed in 1992 after Libya refused to extradite to Britain or the United States two Libyans suspected of bombing an American airliner over Scotland nine years ago, killing two-hundred-and-seventy people. Libya says they won't get a fair trial in Britain or the United States, but has agreed to hand them over to a third party. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
