England's cricketers were left needing 236 to win Friday's Champions'
Trophy final in Sharjah.
The West Indies, starting strongly and ending with a flourish from Phil
Simmons, totalled 235 for seven from their 50 overs.
Kent's Matthew Fleming took 3-42 with his medium pace and brilliantly ran out
top-scorer Shivnarine Chanderpaul for 76.
Another direct hit, this time by Robert Croft, illustrated the high standard
of England's out-field cricket, and overall Hollioake's team did achieve some damage
limitation after the West Indies had reached 62 without loss after the first 10
overs of their innings.
Stuart Williams played fluently for 55 from 67 balls, while Chanderpaul's 76
took him 109 deliveries.
But Mark Ealham led the England fight back by bowling his 10 over stint for
just 26 runs.
Off-spinner Robert Croft also bowled tidily and England had the considerable
bonus of taking Brian Lara's wicket for just two.
Lara, dragging his back foot forward after being beaten by Ealham, was stumped
by Alec Stewart in bizarre fashion, England's wicket keeper waiting a full
second or two for Lara's foot to move forwards before flicking off a bail.
