Turkish and Pakistani leaders launch highway project

Pakistan and Turkey have inaugurated a major new road project in Pakistan, both sides stressing the importance of a modern road network in the country to improve communication links with Central Asia.

The Turkish President, Suleyman Demirel, said the project marked a high point in relations between Turkey and Pakistan.

He was speaking in the Pakistani city of Peshawar, at the inauguration of the project.

The highway, to be built by a Turkish company, will run between Peshawar and Islamabad -- a distance of 154 kilometres -- and is due to be completed within three years
