Cambodia election date set

After weeks of debate, the Cambodian parliament has voted to delay next year's general election by two months.

It'll now be held on July the twenty-sixth instead of May the twenty-third.

MPs voted by a big majority in favour of the delay after the co-Interior Minister Sar Kheng - who is overseeing the election preparations - said the original date was not feasible for technical reasons.

The international community is pressuring Phnom Penh to ensure that the election is truly free and fair, following the ousting last July of the co-premier Prince Norodom Ranariddh.
