African Bugandan kings regain their palace after 30 years
A historically significant ceremony is taking place later today in Uganda to hand back the traditional palace of the Buganda royal family. The palace of the king, known as the Kabaka, has been used as a military barracks since 1966, when it was seized by troops loyal to the then Prime Minister, Milton Obote, who forced the royal family into exile. Those attending the ceremony include President Yoweri Museveni, under whose rule the Kabaka has been rehabilitated. Buganda was an established kingdom for centuries in what later became part of modern Uganda. Four years ago, a new Kabaka, Ronald Mutebi, was crowned. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
