Djibouti: early election results

Early results from the parliamentary elections in Djibouti indicate a victory for the governing alliance, which links President Hassan Gouled Aptidon's Popular Rally for Progess and former rebels from the Front for the Restoration of Democracy.

Results from a third of the polling stations in the city of Djibouti gave the alliance seventy-two per cent of the vote, and the opposition Democratic Renewal Party twenty-eight per cent.

But the opposition has complained of serious voting irregularities.

Turn-out was reported to be low, and correspondents say the elections have been overshadowed by Djibouti's serious economic problems..
