Mandela's emotional farewell

President Nelson Mandela has formally handed over the leadership of the African National Congress to his successor, Thabo Mbeki, appealing to him to try to bring peace and tranquility to South Africa.

In an emotional speech to the party conference in Mafikeng, Mr Mandela said he would know Mr Mbeki had succeeded by the smiles on the faces of the nation's children.

Warning against abuse of power, he said he was confident Mr Mbeki would resist the temptation to surround himself with "yes men" and use his position to settle old scores.

Replying, Mr Mbeki thanked Mr Mandela for his expression of confidence and pledged to work for a more caring society and equal society.
