Security measures for Kenya elections

Less than two weeks before Kenya holds presidential and parliamentary elections, President Moi has declared a special security zone in a western area because of tribal clashes.

The Transmara Kisii region has been the scene of violence between Kisii and Masai tribesmen and up to fifty people have been killed in recent months.

Addressing a rally in Kisii town, Mr Moi said campaigning in the region should be limited to local candidates only.

The BBC East Africa correspondent says the violence is in part linked to cattle stealing; however, she says that with elections so close, there is speculation that traditional hostilities have been whipped up for political ends.
