President Tudjman warns against Croatian corruption

President Franjo Tudjman of Croatia has spoken out against corruption, in a speech to parliament in Zagreb.

President Tudjman's said there was some still way to go in fighting corruption, and closing the gap between the rich and the poor.

His remarks follow growing public concern about allegedly corrupt government officials, and criticism from the head of the Croatian Roman Catholic church, Archbishop Josip Bozanic, about the emergence of a newly rich elite.

Correspondents say it's the first time President Tudjman has so openly acknowledged the problem.
