Separatist leaders briefly detained in Kashmir
Police in Indian-administered Kashmir briefly detained leaders of the separatist All Party Hurriyat Conference, who were on their way to the town of Tral where a Muslim shrine was destroyed by fire on Tuesday. The authorities were said to be concerned that their presence would lead to renewed demonstrations in the town. Four people were injured there when police opened fire yesterday on demonstrators. Police have been asked to investigate the fire, which local officials say was an accident. Some local people have accused the authorities of being slow to put the fire out.
