A report in Thursday's Sun newspaper said Newcastle had offered to swap defender Darren Peacock, last season's player of the year, and £4m for Speed, a Welsh international midfielder.

Everton value Speed, who they signed from Leeds, at £7m.

The Goodison Park boss, Howard Kendall, needs to sell players before he can go on a spending spree to replace them.

And he is desperate to add new blood having slipped into the relegation zone.

Meanwhile, Newcastle fans are keen to see manager Kenny Dalglish add to his squad following recent results which have seen the Magpies bow out of the European Champions' League and lose touch with the Premiership leaders.

Sheffield Wednesday have also been linked with a move for Speed.
