EU suspends Tibet aid project
The European Union says it has suspended a ten-million dollar development project in Tibet because of the prevention of a British aid worker from entering Tibet. A spokesman for the European Commission vice-president, Leon Brittan, said the EU had asked China to clarify why the worker for the Save the Children agency was being refused permission to participate in the project. The scheme involves co-operation between the Tibetan authorities and international aid agencies to improve health and education services and irrigation in southern Tibet.
