The vacancy arose after President Leghari (left) stepped down after a power struggle

A court in Pakistan has overturned a decision of the election commission that a presidential candidate nominated by the Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, should be disqualified from standing.

A full hearing will be held later, but the judge ruled that Mr Sharif's candidate Muhammed Rafiq Tarerwill be allowed to compete in the election at the end of this month.

Correspondents say that with his own candidate now almost certain to win the presidential race, there will be few institutions in Pakistan not run by the Prime Minister's supporters.
