Aussies give England's women World Cup lesson

England's women have crashed to their first defeat in the defence of their World Cup title.

They were beaten by eight wickets by Australia in Nagpur, India.

Despite the result, England are guarenteed a quarter-final place along with Australia, who are likely to be installed as tournament favourites.

England were bowled out for 95 in 49 overs. Opener Charlotte Edwards, who scored an England record 173 in their last match against Ireland, went for a duck in the third over, bowled by Cathryn Fitzpatrick.

Only Barbara Daniels and Melissa Reynard offered any resistance, both making 23 as England were dismissed two balls short of their allotted 50 overs.

A combination of pace and spin tore through England's order, which had scored 1,095 runs in four previous matches.

The outstanding bowler was Olivia Magno, who claimed four wickets for just 10 runs, while Fitzpatrick took three for 25.

The Aussies were never in trouble, knocking off the runs for the loss of two wickets in just 23 overs.
