Butlin's 60 years on and still attracting holiday-makers

Butlins has launched a search for a new generation of Redcoats for its British holiday camps.

Young people who think they can keep holidaymakers entertained are being asked to audition for one of up to 200 new jobs.

Life as a Redcoat has provided a vital starting point in the entertainment careers of the likes of Sir Cliff Richard, Michael Barrymore and Des O'Connor.

Kyran Jesson, director of entertainment at Butlins, said: "Our search for the stars of the future will allow some of Britain's most talented young people to put their foot on the ladder to stardom."

New Academies of Excellence for Redcoats, to be opened in 1999, will teach skills ranging from stage management to the performance of musical theatre.

Mr Jesson said anyone over 18, who has a talent for singing, dancing, acting or comedy, should write to Butlins.

The best applicants will be asked to audition before a panel of experts and celebrities early next year.

Earlier this year Butlins announced a £139m makeover of its camps and staff including a new uniform for the Redcoats.

The camps - traditionally associated with knobbly-knee competitions and beauty contests - have recently seen their family image come into question.

A Channel 4 documentary in November alleged that the holiday camps' founder, Sir Billy Butlin, was not as wholesome as he seemed and that he ran an empire "founded on sexual favours".
